IBRAHIM AYOMIKU AZEEZ vs. ROYAL RICHESTER HOTEL
The Plaintiff, a British citizen and businessman ordinarily resident in the UK, stayed at the Defendant's hotel in Accra. On October 14, 2013, a fire broke out on the first floor of the hotel, causing smoke to engulf the Plaintiff's room on the second floor. Due to intense smoke and impaired vision, the Plaintiff jumped from his balcony to escape, sustaining injuries to his left leg, knee, waist, and spine. He received medical treatment in Ghana and later in the UK. The Plaintiff claimed damages for injuries, medical expenses, loss of personal items, loss of income, and emotional stress. The Defendant denied negligence, attributing the fire to an electrical surge and asserting that the Plaintiff was offered a ladder to escape but chose to jump. The Defendant also denied loss of personal items and disputed the Plaintiff's claims for unpaid hotel bills.
