Ebo Quansah, the editor of the Ghanaian Chronicle in his complaint&amp;#39;
claimed<o:p></o:p>ASEMPA
FM in one of its programmes on Monday, October 4 2010, played a recording of a
private conversation between him and a friend at a public place, the Ghana<o:p></o:p>International
Press Centre. In his statement of complaint, Mr. Quansah said the person who
recorded his conversation did not seek his permission and therefore viewed both
the recording and airing as an intrusion into his privacy.<o:p></o:p>At
a meeting between representatives of MULTI MEDIA Group Llmited, owners of<o:p></o:p>ASEMPA
FM, the complainant at the Complaints Settlement Committee of the NMC, the
solicitors and representatives of Multi-Media Group Limited in their submission
admitted that ASEMPA FM acted unprofessionally and rendered an unqualified
apology to the complainant.<o:p></o:p>The
complainant accepted the apology of the representatives of Multi Media and Asempa
FM.<o:p></o:p>Subsequent
to its pledge, the Management of ASEMPA FM in a statement dated<o:p></o:p>February
25, 2011-APOLOGY FOR WRONGFUL BROADCAST which is quoted verbatim below
reaffirmed its apology:<o:p></o:p>“THE
MANGEMENT OF ASEMPA FM WISHES TO OFFER ITS .UNQUALIFIED<o:p></o:p>APOLOGY
TO MR. EBO QUANSAH FOR THE BROADCAST ON OCTOBER 4, 2010<o:p></o:p>OF
A RECOR-DING OF A· PRIVA·TE CONVERSATION BETWEEN HIM AND A FRIEND.<o:p></o:p>THE
MANEGEMENT HAS REALISED IN RETROSPECT THAT IT SHOULD HA VE<o:p></o:p>EXERCISED
ITS EDITORIAL DISCRETION SO AS NOT TO BROADCAST THE SAID<o:p></o:p>RECORDING.<o:p></o:p>WE
APOLOGISE TO MR. EBO QUANSAH AND ANYBODY ELSE WHO MAY HAVE<o:p></o:p>BEEN
AFFECTED BY THE SAID BROADCAST, AND RECOMMIT OURSELVES TO<o:p></o:p>THE
HIGHEST STANDARDS OF EDITORIAL DISCRETION TD ENSURE THAT SUCH<o:p></o:p>AN
UNFORTUNATE INCIDENT DOES NOT RECUR.<o:p></o:p>The
NMC commends the humility and courage of Multi Media Group and Asempa FM to admit
their error and apologise accordingly to the complainant and take the
opportunity to remind all journalists and media houses in Ghana of Article 5(1)
that. JOURNALISTS<o:p></o:p>SHOULD
RESPECT THE RIGHT OF THE INDIVIDUAL TO PRIVACY AND HUMAN<o:p></o:p>
